When a leading-edge dimmer chops the current sharply, the driver's internal components physically vibrate at mains frequency. That vibration is the buzz you hear.

How to fix it, in order
Work down the list, don't skip
- Test at full brightness. Silent at 100% but humming when dimmed confirms the dimmer.
- Check the dimmer type. Leading-edge on an LED load? That's your answer. Specify a trailing-edge dimmer rated for LEDs.
- Check the minimum load. Add up the fixture's total wattage. Under 10–20W, you may need a dimmer rated for low loads.

- Then, and only then, suspect the driver. It's the least likely cause and the most expensive assumption.

Does the type of globe change the noise?
Fitting type matters less than the driver
Australians often assume the globe fitting is to blame — that an E14 candle globe hums where an E27 wouldn't. In practice the fitting is irrelevant. What matters is whether each globe carries its own driver, and whether that driver was built to be dimmed.
A chandelier with six individually-driven E14 globes has six small drivers, each capable of humming. An integrated LED fixture has one larger driver, usually better shielded. That's why multi-globe chandeliers are statistically noisier than integrated ones on the same dimmer — six chances instead of one.
If you're mixing globes, keep them identical. Two brands of dimmable LED on one circuit can beat against each other and produce noise neither makes alone.

Something changed — find what
A chandelier that was silent for a year and now hums points to a change rather than a design flaw. The usual triggers, in order of likelihood:
- A globe was replaced with a non-dimmable or different-brand LED
- A globe has partially failed — a dying driver often hums before it dies
- Another appliance was added to the same circuit, shifting the load
- The dimmer itself is ageing — they do wear out, typically after 8–10 years
Work backwards from whatever changed most recently. A single swapped globe is the most common answer, and the simplest to reverse.
