The quick rules
If you would rather not use the tool, these are the proportions it applies, at a glance.
| Where | Fixture size | Hang height |
|---|---|---|
| Over a dining table | About half to two-thirds the width of the table | Base 75-90cm above the tabletop |
| Over a kitchen island | Total light length 60-70% of the island | Base 70-75cm above the benchtop |
| Living room / bedroom | Diameter (cm) ≈ (room width + length in cm) ÷ 10 | Base at least 210cm above the floor |
| Entry / foyer | Diameter (cm) ≈ (width + length in cm) ÷ 10 | Base at least 210cm above the floor; centre in a void |
How these numbers are worked out
- Fixture width over a table is set to about half to two-thirds of the table's width, so the light reads as generous without crowding the setting or the sightline across the table.
- Kitchen island length uses 60-70% of the island so a single linear piece, or a row of pendants, sits in proportion with clear space at each end.
- Room and foyer diameter uses the long-standing designer's rule: add the room's width and length in centimetres and divide by ten for a diameter in centimetres.
- Hang height above a table or bench starts at 75cm for a 2.4m ceiling and adds roughly 2.5cm for every 10cm of extra ceiling height, keeping the light clear of eye level while staying connected to the surface.
- Clearance keeps the base of any fixture at least 210cm above the floor in walk-through areas. All hard-wired installation in Australia must be carried out by a licensed electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000.
